Zelenskyy commented, "We can already see that Russia is scrambling to resume conversations immediately after it hears about cruise missiles." These remarks referred to earlier comments about providing long-range weapons to Ukraine.

Political Developments and International Reactions

A former American diplomat, Dan Fried, observed, "The Russian leader is attempting to derail the momentum toward increased pressure on Russia." Fried continued, "We'll see on Friday, but the likelihood of achieving a truce by pushing Moscow to engage sincerely seem to have diminished."

This situation followed the US president had in recent days been hardening his language toward Moscow until Thursday's conversation with the Russian president, which the Kremlin characterized as "highly frank and trustful."

EU Fuel Sanctions and Market Impact

The European Union have established a requirement for energy suppliers into the European Union to prove their products are not sourced from Russian oil, according to a official guideline released on Thursday. This measure is part of the European Union's upcoming ban on purchases of fuels processed from Russian crude, which is included in its 18th sanctions package against Moscow over its war in Ukraine.

Market analysts observed that investment patterns appeared to be factoring in the potential reduction of India's imports of Russian oil. Several Indian refiners are getting ready to reduce purchases from Russia, with projections of a gradual decrease, as reported by sources knowledgeable about the matter.

"This represents a positive development for the oil market as it would remove a major buyer of Russian oil," said Tony Sycamore, adding that oil prices were stable on the trading day.

Security Developments and Infrastructure Attacks

A massive Russian unmanned aircraft and rocket attack targeted gas facilities in eastern Ukraine on the same day, resulting in disruptions in eight areas. Ukrainian officials stated that Russian forces deployed hundreds of unmanned vehicles and many of projectiles, along with aerial munitions.

"During this fall, the Russian forces use daily opportunities to strike at our energy infrastructure," said Ukraine's president, noting that strikes impacted the regions of Chernihiv, eastern Ukraine, Poltava, Sumy and western Ukraine.

Kallas announced a "plan" to prepare for potential security challenges by the end of the decade, including a new defensive network to be fully operational by the end of 2027.

This initiative, dubbed the "EU defensive program," is projected to begin working in its first phase by the end of 2026 and be fully functioning by the following year. Brussels aims to secure the backing of EU leaders at a meeting next week.
