The White Sox Secure Star Hitter Munetaka Murakami on an Major Multi-Million Dollar Contract.

In a notable move for their rebuilding roster, the American League club have signed infielder Munetaka Murakami, completing a two-year contract with the high-profile player.

Contract Details and Added Benefits

The deal grants a substantial signing bonus, to be paid within 30 days, combined with compensation of $16M for the next season and seventeen million for the 2027 year.

Importantly, Murakami's compensation can increase based on performance achievements in 2026:

  • A seven-figure bonus for winning the league MVP award.
  • $500K for finishing in the top three in MVP voting.
  • $250K for finishing in the top ten.
  • $250,000 for earning the Rookie of the Year honor.

His deal also stipulates that he will not be optioned to the farm system without his permission and makes him a free agent at the end of the contract. Extra provisions include a dedicated interpreter and travel costs between his home country and the States.

Transfer Payment and Team Legacy

As part of the signing, Chicago is obligated to provide a transfer fee of roughly $6.58 million to the Tokyo Yakult Swallows, Murakami's previous team in Japan's professional league. The Japanese club are also entitled to a additional payment of any triggered incentive payments.

Murakami joins the ranks as the fourth-ever Japanese to play for the South Siders, in the footsteps of pitcher Shingo Takatsu (2004-05), infielder Tadahito Iguchi (2005-07), and fielder Kosuke Fukudome (2012). Notably, Takatsu previously coached Murakami back in Japan.

Murakami, a lefty bat who will turn 26 in February, enters a emerging core of hitters in Chicago that includes prospects like Colson Montgomery, Kyle Teel, and Chase Meidroth.
