The Eurovision Song Contest Was Once a Lighthearted Spectacle – But It Has Evolved Into a Cynical Way to Whitewash War.
A freshly coined acronym came to light a few months after the start of Israel’s bombardment of Gaza. Referred to as WCNSF, it stands for “Child casualty without any family left”. This acronym is unique to Gaza, as stated by doctors like paediatricians. Typically, it is uncommon for doctors to attend to a child who has seen the death of their entire family. However, there has been no semblance of normality about the devastating conflict in Gaza, where complete genealogies have been wiped out and the number of young amputees is greater than that of any other place in the world. Nothing ordinary in numerous doctors coming back from a landscape of rubble with accounts of children being deliberately targeted.
An Unimaginable Crisis Regardless of a Supposed Ceasefire
Gaza remains an utter catastrophe. Essential medical supplies are being blocked those in need, and international watchdogs assert that genocidal acts are continuing. Authorities rejects these claims, just as it denies each claim it is charged with. But while grieving children who lost parents are now freezing in temporary shelters, there is some ostensibly positive news: apparently nothing is going to stop the Eurovision from pursuing its professed goal of “togetherness and artistic sharing.” Eurovision will continue to roll out a blood-red carpet for Israel, despite the fact that a number of European countries have now withdrawn in objection. Since this, it seems, is what global togetherness resembles.
Historically, Eurovision prohibited Russia from taking part in 2022 due to the “serious conflict in Ukraine”. But the crisis in Gaza seems treated differently.
Contradictory Principles
Forget the fact that Israel was alleged to have used irregular participation methods last year in what seems to have been an bid to manipulate Eurovision. Forget the fact that a young child was allegedly fatally struck in Gaza recently. Forget the fact that attacks by settlers and systematic expulsions in the West Bank have surged. Overlook the situation that global media are still denied independent reporting in Gaza. All of this, evidently, should be allowed to get in the way of Eurovision’s self-proclaimed spirit of unity.
The Pageant Proceeds Against a Backdrop of Profound Human Cost
The contest marks seven decades next year – roughly two times the projected longevity of a person in Gaza today. The event will proceed, but it will never be able to restore the camp joy it historically embodied. An institution that once promoted togetherness has devolved into a blatant mechanism to whitewash war.
