The gravest projected effects of the global heating for the UK have been detailed by scientists, ranging from a scorching 4C jump in average temperatures to a 6.5-foot rise in sea level. An alternative projection foresees a decline of 6C in temperature following the failure of crucial Atlantic Ocean currents, which would profoundly upset farming and power requirements.
Possible Outcomes, Not Predictions
These effects, some of which are connected to irreversible climate shifts, are viewed as low probability but possible. The scientists explained that these projections filled a gap in risk assessment that had left the UK not ready for extreme outcomes.
"The climate extremes we have detailed should not be seen as certainties, but they are credible," stated the professor who led the study. "The UK has been planning in the absence of the frameworks to plan for extreme possibilities. We've now given policymakers what they need to get ready for future conditions they hope never happen, but must not overlook."
A Range of Severe Conditions Projections
A second set of severe models details the possible scale of harsh climate between now and the year 2100. These indicate that thermometer readings could skyrocket in certain periods by up to 6C above the norm, while rainfall could be three times typical amounts.
The probability of the extreme scenarios coming to pass could not be calculated due to uncertainty about what action will be enacted to address climate change and how the planet's climate will respond. This analysis was likened to defence planning or resilience checks for economic stability.

- 4C Temperature Rise: Worldwide averages soaring past 4C by 2100 could occur if climate action collapses or if powerful amplifying effects including the Amazon rainforest becoming a net carbon source release its huge repository of carbon. This would lead to intense and enduring heatwaves and droughts affecting the UK in summer.
- Atlantic Current Collapse: A major ocean current, the AMOC, is losing strength and becoming unstable due to global heating. A full shutdown commencing by 2030 would lead to a 6C cooling in the UK. "Agriculture would be severely challenged and water supplies would be drastically changed," noted the lead researcher.

The analysis developed the worst-case scenarios using a mix of real-world events, computer simulations and climate physics. These outcomes exclude potential global problems such as the agricultural collapse and increased conflict.
This work was commissioned as part of a national risk assessment framework. Independent analyses have cautioned that insufficient focus was being paid to catastrophic yet improbable risks.
An independent advisory body has said that the UK needs to "prepare for two degrees of warming" and evaluate the risks for 4C. Previous adaptation plans have been labeled being "insufficient" by some observers.
