No fewer than 13 passengers killed and ninety-eight injured in train crash in Mexico.

A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the speed and handling of the country's flagship public works projects.

The disaster took place on the Interoceanic Train, a line built to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.

“We are going to rigorously clarify what caused this accident,” declared the head of state.

The president announced that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The leader noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those affected.

Major Initiative of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the immediate past president, whose time in office finished the previous year. This rail line was a hallmark of his administration's strategic vision for the southern region.

Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economic fortunes of a relatively less developed part of the country.

Project Execution and Worries

The development of both railway systems was supervised by the armed forces, marking a notable growth of its duties in public infrastructure. They were completed at an rapid rate, defying predictions to be partially launched before the end of that administration.

However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously sparked persistent questions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This involves an previous collision this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced several non-fatal derailments.

Demands for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the disaster, the leader of a primary political opposition called for an immediate halt in the development and management of all comparable projects.

This stoppage was suggested until the completion of a thorough safety audit. The party emphasized that the tragedy "demands swift accountability."

In response, the head of state asserted that the train had been running in complete compliance with all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the development and operation of these vital initiatives.
