Milei Statuette, Anyone? Meloni to Auction Off World Leaders' Gifts for Good Cause

Relinquishing unwanted gifts can be considered a little discourteous – unless it's done for a noble purpose.

A Philanthropic Auction

The leader of Italy, Giorgia Meloni, plans to auction an estimated 270 gifts given to her by international figures while abroad. This unusual assortment reportedly features objects like a chainsaw-wielding statuette of Argentinian president Javier Milei and a pair of exotic blue snake-skin shoes with gilded heels.

The presents, together, are valued at around €800,000. They are scheduled to be sold in a public auction by a Italian auction firm. The specific date remains to be announced, although the goal is to conduct the sale before Christmas, with the revenue donated to a selection of charitable causes.

The presents reportedly stored in a repository on the upper level of the prime minister's official office. Reports indicate that Meloni furthermore considering auction off gifts given to her political forerunners that have been sitting unused indefinitely.

The full gift list is yet to be made public, but a glimpse emerged earlier this year when a comprehensive document of items received was reviewed by officials. The query raised if a legal value limit was being followed. By law, a prime minister must declare presents valued above €300.

An International Assortment of Presents

The collection includes:

  • A scarf from the leader of Albania, allegedly presented to Meloni for her birthday during a meeting abroad.
  • A sari from Kerala from the Indian leader.
  • A case of jewelry from the Slovakian president.
  • A porcelain tea set and six bottles of wine from Hungary's leader.
  • A pottery dish from the ex-American leader.
  • A electronic pad from the leader of Ukraine.
  • Artworks from the Moldovan government.
  • Additional objects including makeup, a board, and numerous carpets from trips to North African and Middle Eastern countries.
"Perhaps the oddest gifts were the Milei figurine and the exotic footwear," observers have said.

Political Backdrop

The prime minister has received praise, mainly from her allies, with building relationships with foreign leaders and re-establishing Italy as a prominent force on the international platform once again.

The forthcoming sale highlights a distinct method to handle the protocol gifts that build up during a leader's tenure.
