Fresh analysis reveals that individuals who stop using popular weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain lost weight much more quickly than those who end traditional diet and exercise regimens.
Research printed in a major health publication demonstrates that while obese people often shed about a fifth of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"Individuals purchasing such treatments must be cognizant of the risk of quick weight regain when the therapy ends," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain implies a return to starting mass in about a year and a half.
Comparing Approaches
The analysis, which looked at 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.
Scientists note that people who shed pounds through dieting generally see a more gradual creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
Explaining the Quick Rebound
Nutrition scientists believe the mode of action of the jabs explains the amplified rebound.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate hunger.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production could lead to the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also lessen responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is uncontrolled, making overeating far more likely."
A Chronic Disease?
The NHS advise the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
Many experts say that, considering the high risk of relapse, the therapy might need to be long-term.
This opinion is supported by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "emphasize the long-term nature of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
Patient Testimonies
Individuals who have stopped the medication report a sudden return of cravings.
"It felt as if a trigger that goes on and I was suddenly ravenous," recalled one woman.
The struggle is exacerbated if individuals have not established sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Widespread Adoption
Recent estimates indicate that millions of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand continuing to grow.
- Use is greater among women compared to males.
- The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
- Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Finally, experts caution that while the jabs are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone solution and lasting health benefits hinges on integrated behavioural support.
