The Problem

Not many plants test a person’s perseverance like ferns. One day they’re full of life; soon after they look similar to dry brush forgotten on a heater. Fern fronds crisp up at the slightest sign of dry air, and after they turn brown, many think it’s game over.

This Trick

Place the fern inside a transparent bag – however leave it open as it still needs air circulation – and set it in bright but indirect light.

This Theory

This method creates a small greenhouse, trapping moisture around the plant. Think of it as recreating the tropical environment – the humid microclimate where ferns flourish. It doesn’t hydrate the plant for you, but it significantly reduces evaporation and promotes fragile young leaves to unfurl.

The Test

I used this trick on a common fern that looked beyond saving. Following a week and a half in its misty cocoon the potting medium was moist to the touch and tiny green curls started emerging. By the end of the month, the plant was noticeably thicker and more vibrant.

The Conclusion

This isn’t a miracle cure and you may lose a few leaves during the process, but the plastic bag method can truly rescue a fern near death. At no expense, it’s one of the most effective revival techniques out there.
