Foolishness and Royal Self-Entitlement Sunk Andrew, and It May Not Be Over Yet

It all began with a solitary photograph, possibly the most consequential ever snapped of a member of the monarchy.

In the frame appeared the Earl of Inverness, arm-in-arm a female youth, while a companion beamed knowingly in the backdrop.

Without that image, captured at a social event in 2001, few would have credited the allegations of a young woman who said she was trafficked across the Atlantic and forced to have perfunctory relations with a individual of the royal family?

A curious, telling move by someone who had overtly asserted to have never heard of her, asserted he could no have had intimate contact with her, and yet handed over millions of monarchical resources to settle a long-delayed lawsuit.

Years of Scandal

Against this backdrop, discussions of the royals acting firmly to sever ties with Andrew are misguided. This affair has continued for the majority of 15 years since that photograph, and another photo of Andrew ambling amiably with a disgraced financier came to light.

  • Hubris: To what extent did his family members, possibly even his mother and father, realize that Andrew was so arrogant?
  • Problematic Connections: They must have known, if his employees and the police were performing their duties, that he had some highly questionable associates given he openly welcomed them to estates.
  • Fiscal Irresponsibility: If the household did not know about his intimate behaviors, they certainly knew about his overspending with taxpayer funds.

Trips were printed in official documents: helicopter travel from the estate to a sporting venue and back again in time for lunch, exclusive air travel instead of scheduled services, all for the benefit of "the travel enthusiast".

World of Deference

Furthermore the entitlement which demanded deference when he walked into a room or the profound awareness about his designations used on his letterheads in messages to his friends.

He could get away with it while his matriarch, who inexplicably spoiled him, was still living. The monarch did at least remove him of public duties and honorary colonelcies in the aftermath of his catastrophic and, we now know, mendacious public statement six years ago.

Latest Events

It was only in the last two weeks that events sped up, following the issuance of accounts giving more grim information of his conduct and that of his connections.

Further disclosures have again revealed Andrew's belief that he could get away with being untruthful about his relationship with a disgraced individual.

The public (and the media) were far more perceptive of the royals. There was no one of any significance to defend him, a outcome of all those years of arrogance.

Royal Worries

The more astute monarchical figures recognized that. The one imperative is to hand down the institution, if not as heretofore at least complete and unblemished.

They have spent the last 190 years trying to reverse the legacy of earlier rulers, showing they are valuable, dutiful and reactive to their people.

His actions endangered all that in danger in an era when submission and discretion is no longer sufficient.

The Fallout

Ultimately, the well-known uncertain monarch was pressured additional. There was no other option. The palace had lost control of the narrative.

Presently the loss of designations and the ongoing and permanent personal shame that will afflict Andrew most deeply.

  • Downgrading: Reduced to just a private citizen
  • Past Example: The primary royal to surrender his titles in contemporary era
  • Military Service: Notably stinging given his role in the engagement

He continues to be a constitutional officer, theoretically able to substitute for the monarch, and he is still eighth in line to the throne, but not any of these will truly occur.

Future Prospects

Will people he encounters still defer to him? Might they still make mistakes and call him Your Highness? Would they say Mr,

Naturally, he is not withdrawing to an ordinary town, but to the royal family's extensive property at a royal residence.

In that place, he will be furnished by the sovereign with one of the grace and favour houses and given some type of financial support.

This differs from his former home, where he paid a nominal rent for more than 20 years, and Norfolk is a bit distant, but even so it may not be sufficiently removed.

Pending Matters

The situation continues. There are still documents in the hands of American legislators to be made public.

  • Political Pressure: Might parliament seek further action
  • Fiscal Review: Or scrutinize the improper use of public money
  • Legal Possibility: There may even be a police investigation into his behavior

Perhaps for the time being the harm to the monarchy to the monarchy is contained. The narrative from the institution was clearly that the revocation of titles was what the monarch, and notably other senior royals, desired.

A Shift in Position

The cessation of pretence that Andrew was making the choice himself. And, significantly, the short communication showed clearly that the monarchy were aligning with the complainant's narrative of incidents.

Even more, for the initial instance they finally showed concern for the survivors: "The censures are considered essential, regardless of the reality that he continues to deny the allegations against him."

Finally it is entitlement, selfishness and inactivity that will kill the monarchy. In his folly, self-gratification and venality, Andrew appears never to have understood that lesson.
