Champions League Matches This Evening: Marseille v Newcastle & Additional Games

Greetings to a fresh evening of electrifying European Cup football. Nine games are set for this evening, featuring three British teams in play. The Blues take on Barça in the marquee match of the night, whilst The Magpies visit the French side and Manchester City welcome Bayer Leverkusen.

Group Rankings

We're at the midway stage of the league stage, so the rankings is beginning to form. Each of the six British teams are presently in the upper twelve, however there are only 2 points between fifth and 16th position, thus there's a sense of volatility about the entire situation. It’s all up for grabs.

Historical Context

The sole past encounter between Newcastle and Marseille was the Uefa Cup semi-final of 2003-04, won by an emerging star from Ivory Coast. Bayer Leverkusen and Manchester City have never met before. Chelsea and Barcelona have some past encounters.

Early Match Updates

Just one goal during the opening period of the two early games. Dahl's 6th-minute sizzler has given Jose Mourinho’s Benfica a 1-0 advantage at Ajax.

Marseille v Newcastle Preview

Although Newcastle arrived in the south of France coming off their confidence-boosting two-one home English top-flight win against City on Saturday, and having defeated Union Saint-Gilloise, the Portuguese side and Bilbao in the Champions League, their only away win since the start of April came in the Belgian capital at Union SG.

It's not that Eddie Howe was overly keen to talk about the psychological aspect of this away form issue. “The European Cup is different to domestic games,” said the manager, whose team are sixth in the European table, with nine pts from a possible twelve and direct progression to the knockout phase almost within touching distance. “I am not sure if you can draw parallels between them.”

A dedicated live feed is available for Barcelona vs Chelsea. Scott Murray, the minute-by-minute version of Maradona is on duty for that.
