Ben & Jerry's Founding Partner Alleges Parent Company Halted Palestine-Themed Frozen Dessert Flavor
The original creators behind the famous ice cream brand Ben and Jerry's has stated how parent company the multinational conglomerate stopped the introduction for a new Palestine-themed ice cream flavor.
Ben Cohen, that established the business alongside his partner, revealed how he will independently develop this new flavor within an individual collection highlighting causes Ben & Jerry's was prevented from speaking out about.
Ongoing Conflict Between Founders versus Parent Company
This latest development intensifies the continuing tension among the internationally recognized ice cream maker and Unilever, the UK-based consumer goods corporation that acquired Ben & Jerry's for over two decades.
The co-founders have asserted that Unilever along with its ice cream arm the Magnum brand unlawfully blocked Ben & Jerry's against "fulfilling its ethical commitments".
Watermelon Sorbet becoming an Emblem for Solidarity
Mr. Cohen revealed through social media that he is creating a new watermelon-flavored frozen dessert, requesting consumer ideas for naming options and additional components.
“I'm doing what they couldn't,” Mr. Cohen declared in his kitchen. “I'm making a watermelon-flavored frozen dessert that calls for lasting ceasefire in Palestine and calls for addressing the harm that was done there.”
This particular fruit has emerged as an emblem for support for the Palestinian people because of its colors, that match the colors in the Palestinian flag – red, green, black and white.
Historical Activism plus Recent Developments
In 2021, Ben & Jerry's ceased sales of their merchandise in territories under Israeli control, resulting in the parent company selling the Israeli operation over to an Israeli distributor, thereby permitting ongoing distribution in the occupied West Bank.
The new dessert series will be developed under Mr. Cohen's personal brand, the socially conscious dessert company that originally created several years back to support former political contender Senator Sanders via the product "Bernie's Return".
Management Changes plus Upcoming Intentions
The founder revealed that he plans to create additional frozen dessert varieties that address issues that Ben & Jerry's was silenced from speaking about openly due to Unilever.
This development follows partner Jerry Greenfield stepped down from Ben & Jerry's in September, following decades with the organization, mentioning concerns that the company's autonomy was undermined following corporate moves to curb its social activism.
Previously, Mr. Cohen stated that “My partner has a really big heart and the ongoing dispute with our parent company was deeply distressing him."
“My conscience compels me to continue to work within the organization to advocate for corporate autonomy so that it can achieve its ethical purpose, the principles that it was founded on and has maintained for over 40 years," he explained to media outlets.
