Anthony Barry Shares The Philosophy: Wearing England's Shirt Should Be Like a Cape, Not Armour.

Ten years back, Barry featured at a lower division club. Now, his attention is fixed on helping the head coach secure World Cup glory next summer. His path from athlete to trainer commenced as an unpaid coach with the youth team. Barry reflects, “Evening sessions, a partial pitch, organizing 11-a-side … deflated balls, scarce bibs,” and it captivated him. He discovered his calling.

Rapid Rise

His advancement has been remarkable. Beginning as Paul Cook’s assistant, he built a standing through unique exercises and excellent people skills. His club career included top European clubs, while also serving in roles with national teams with the Republic of Ireland, Belgium, and Portugal. He's coached big names such as top footballers. Now, with England, it’s full-time, the “pinnacle” in his words.

“Dreams are the starting point … Yet I'm convinced that obsession can move mountains. You have the dream and then you plan: ‘How can we achieve it, gradually?’ We aim for World Cup victory. Yet dreams alone aren't enough. We must create a systematic approach so we can to maximize our opportunities.”

Detail-Oriented Approach

Passion, especially with the smallest details, characterizes his journey. Toiling around the clock under the sun—sometimes the moon, too, they both challenge limits. The approach feature player analysis, a heat-proof game model for the World Cup in the US, Canada, and Mexico, and creating a unified squad. He stresses the national team spirit and rejects terms such as "break".

“This isn't a vacation or a rest,” Barry notes. “We had to build something that the players want to be part of and where they're challenged that returning to club duty feels easier.”

Greedy Coaches

The assistant coach says and the head coach as “very greedy”. “We want to dominate every aspect of the game,” he states. “We want to conquer the entire field and that’s what we spend many of our days on. Our responsibility not only to stay ahead of the trends but to beat them and set new standards. It’s a constant process focused on finding solutions. And to simplify complexity.

“We have 50 days with the players before the World Cup finals. We have to play an intricate approach that offers a strategic upper hand and we must clarify it during that time. It’s to take it from idea to information to understanding to action.

“To create a system enabling productivity in that window, it's crucial to employ the entire 500 days we'll have from when we started. When the squad is away, we have to build relationships among them. We must dedicate moments communicating regularly, observing them live, sense their presence. If we just use the 50 days, it's impossible.”

World Cup Qualifiers

He is getting ready ahead of the concluding matches in the qualifying campaign – versus Serbia in London and Albania in Tirana. They've already ensured qualification after six consecutive victories without conceding a goal. Yet, no let-up is planned; instead. This is the time to reinforce the team’s identity, to maintain progress.

“We are both certain that the style of play ought to embody the best aspects about the Premier League,” Barry explains. “The fitness, the versatility, the strength, the honesty. The national team shirt should be harder than ever to get but comfortable to have on. It ought to be like a superhero's cape instead of heavy armour.

“To make it light, it's crucial to offer a style that allows them to move and run similar to weekly matches, that resonates with them and allows them to take the handbrake off. They need to reduce hesitation and increase execution.

“There are emotional wins available to trainers in attack and defense – playing out from the back, attacking high up. Yet, in the central zone in that part of the ground, we feel the game has become stuck, notably in domestic leagues. Everybody has so much information these days. They can organize – defensive shapes. Our aim is to focus on accelerating the game through midfield.”

Thirst for Improvement

Barry’s hunger for improvement is all-consuming. While training for the Uefa pro licence, he felt anxious over the speaking requirement, as his cohort contained luminaries including former players. So, to build his skill set, he sought out the most challenging environments available to him to improve his talks. One was HMP Walton locally, where he also took inmates during an exercise.

He earned his license with top honors, and his dissertation – about dead-ball situations, where he studied 16,154 throw-ins – became a published work. Lampard was among those convinced and he recruited the coach as part of his backroom with the Blues. After Lampard's dismissal, it spoke volumes that Chelsea removed virtually all of his coaches while keeping Barry.

The next manager at Stamford Bridge took over, and, four months later, they claimed the Champions League. When he was let go, the coach continued under Graham Potter. However, when Tuchel returned in Germany, he got Barry out away from London and back alongside him. The Football Association view them as a partnership akin to Gareth Southgate and Steve Holland.
