No less than 64 civilians died in a police operation targeting the organized crime group in the Brazilian city's northern districts - the most extensive and fatal action in the region's records.

Four police officers lost their lives during the security mission in the neighborhoods of Alemão and Penha, local authorities said. In excess of 80 individuals were taken into custody.

Violent conflicts broke out when approximately 2,500 security personnel moved in on Tuesday early hours. The Red Command reacted using armed resistance, igniting obstacles and launching explosives via unmanned aircraft, authorities stated.

The International human rights organization stated it felt "shocked" by the police operation, calling for "prompt and effective investigations".

Operation Impact

The informal settlements close to Rio's airport is regarded as the headquarters of one of Brazil's most powerful organised crime groups.

State officials confirmed a minimum of 50 of those killed were "classified by law enforcement as potential lawbreakers".

Dozens of people were hurt, including innocent bystanders trapped in shooting.

Local Reaction

Locals have described the mountainous region - inhabited by approximately 300,000 residents - to a "combat area" since the operation began.

Access ways continue shut across the area.

Criminal Expansion

The Comando Vermelho organization has been increasing their territory across the Rio state, expanding narcotics distribution networks and dominance over the slum communities.

Security forces reported more than 200kg (441lb) of narcotics were seized in the raid, together with numerous weapons.

Raid Preparation

The joint operation by civil and military police was preceded by a year-long investigation.

Numerous alleged criminals are believed to be members of a faction from the northern region who are presently concealed in the city.
